If you are looking for somewhere to brunch (or even dinner or lunch) over summer, then look no further than Degani Casey Central.  The cafe/restaurant has recently changed hands and they are implementing some great changes to their dinners.  When I popped in there recently a friend and I couldn’t resist the classics.

I tried the SMASHED AVOCADO – seasonal avocado, smashed with a touch of feta, poached eggs, a hint of fresh chilli and lime on toasted grain.  As usual I added a side of bacon.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad smashed avo, this was quite tasty and nicely seasoned.

My friend ordered the BREAKFAST BRUSCHETTA – served on Degani sourdough toast with avocado, fresh tomato, spanish onion, basil and crumbled feta topped with two poached eggs.  Thinking it may be a lighter option she also ordered a side of mushrooms and a hash brown.  It was actually quite a decent sized serve and the extras although delicious weren’t needed.

Coffee and cake was next on the agenda.  Degani are known for their delicious strawberry custard tarts and the tiramisu was tasty too.

The monster shakes are every kids dream, it was huge.

They also serve mojitos as cocktail or a mocktail!  The perfect drink to be sipping over summer.  We tried one of each and they were very refreshing.

Colourfield Cafe

Reviewed by Amy @inbetweendesserts

It’s great to find a local cafe in the suburbs that serves good coffee.  You know you’re going to get a good cup when heading in to Colourfield Cafe.  It’s an inviting cafe with modern colours, I love a splash of mint green and it compliments the  wooden vibe nicely.

My boys are usually milkshake fans but they mixed things up on our visit at Colourfield Cafe by having a strawberry milkshake and a mixed orange and apple juice (freshly squeezed too).

The kids meals were thoroughly enjoyed.  They had fish and chips and pancakes.  I mean how can you go wrong.  And Monday to Wednesday kids eat free with any adult meal purchased.

We enjoyed the delicious muesli & pannacotta and the corn fritters.  The pannacotta passed the wobble test and the muesli was delicious.

The corn fritters were fried and full of flavour.  The fruit chutney went so well with the other flavours of the fritters, bacon, spinach & egg.  The new menu is out now and the corn fritters are a waffle and the muesli has been swapped with a chia seed pudding.  I can’t wait to try some of the dishes from the new menu.

The staff are so friendly and always make you feel welcome.  Check out Colourfield Cafe for a great brunch meal.

The Groove Train

Reviewed by Amy @inbetweendesserts

The Groove train is a great place to dine and is a family friendly restaurant in Narre Warren. It is a large open space with plenty of seating and options for tables and booths. We ate early so were able to get a booth however I’m guessing these would be a popular spot to sit at.  Their menu has a huge range of delicious pizzas, steaks, pasta, curries and more.  The menu for kids is impressive too.  The Groove Train open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Tom the manager was friendly on arrival and Peyton was our waitress during the night. Sometimes eating out with children can be a little difficult but the staff were great and very patient while we looked over the menu and sorted out the drama.  For our entrée and the kids meals we ordered the bruschetta, a serve of arancini, a garlic pizza and the kids fish and chips.

The bruschetta – grilled pesto ciabatta, with ripe tomatoes, Spanish onion, garlic, basil, shaved Parmesan & balsamic reduction. It was so fresh and tasty.

The arancini was a nice combination of green pea and buffalo mozzarella.  The arrabiata sauce complemented it well and had a hint of chilli without it being too hot and overpowering.

The boys had the fish and chips from the kids menu and the garlic pizza. Both were devoured and followed by ice cream with lime topping which they were very excited to have.

I was recommended the gourmet lamb pizza by our waitress – wood fired pizza with Napoli sauce, topped with mozzarella, grilled lamb fillets, Spanish onion, kalamata olives, spinach and tzatziki. Every mouthful was delicious with so much flavour so it was definitely a good recommendation. The lamb was so tender and the sauce was the perfect amount.

Of course I couldn’t eat a whole pizza so I was able to have the remainder of the pizza to takeaway and it was just as good for lunch the next day.

Hubby had grooves mixed grill plate from the steak menu which came with a combination of sirloin steak lamb fillets, bacon, chicken tenderloins, Italian pork sausages which were skewered and grilled then served with steak fries and salad. The meat had a nice charred flavour and was a very generous sized serve.

Of course we couldn’t leave without trying dessert. We had the Nutella calzone which was full of oozey Nutella sauce and strawberries served with a scoop of ice cream. It was rich as expected but extremely delicious. We didn’t expect to eat it all but with a little help from the boys we came close.

Burgers, Beers & Good Times

Reviewed by Amy @inbetweendesserts

This really sums up what Grill’d at Casey Central is all about – Burgers, Beers & Good Times. There’s nothing better than biting in to a delicious burger except of course when it’s a healthier option with all the same great tastes.  The menu at Grill’d is also gluten free except the Panini or traditional bun and their products are 100% Australian sourced. It really is a place for everyone to catch up over great food.

The restaurant is well lit with plenty of seating including booths and a communal table.  The room has an industrial feel with hanging shelves showcasing produce and drinks that they serve.  There is also ample outside seating with heating.

The owner, Abs has created a friendly and welcoming vibe within the restaurant. He also works regularly in the venue leading his team of staff and setting the standard. The smooth operation of the kitchen pumping out the burgers for both diners and takeaway orders was quite impressive to watch working with both speed and efficiency.

Is it child friendly? It sure is. As soon as we were seated the kids were offered colouring sheets and an animal model to keep them entertained.   Off to the menu the kids can choose from a chicken or beef burger served with a mini chips and drink for the reasonable price of $8.50.  They were very accommodating to  our fussy, hard to please eater who just wanted a schnitzel cut into nugget like pieces.

For all the burger lovers you can’t go past the new specialty burgers. Abs recommended I try the Wagyu Wunder (pictured below), a wagyu pattie with Dijon mustard, pickle, aged cheddar, spanish onion, smoked sea salt, tomato sauce and egg mayo $15.90, with added bacon extra $2 .

Hubby got his beef and bacon fix ordering the Mustard & Pickled! – beef pattie with Dijon Mustard, pickle, tasty cheese, salad and relish $11.50 with added bacon $2.

For a bit of variety we opted for a Chips Share Plate $13 with sweet potato chips, famous Grill’d chips and zucchini chips. Looking forward to trying the avocado chips at our next visit.

This burger caught my eye due to the odd shaped bun. Any burger on the menu can be served on this Low carb SuperBun  for an extra $1.50.  They are gluten, grain and dairy free Burgers and have less carbs that a single sushi roll.

Another great looking burger was the Black Crumb Chicken Schnitzel Burger – Black with the Lot $13.50.

As a local it is so good to see places giving back to the community and Grill’d’s Local Matters donation program is great. They support local organisations and groups within the community and you get to vote by dropping your token into the jar of your choice.  It might be for a local school, a sporting club or a charity and they change them up each month.

We had a great experience eating out with the kids at Grill’d. Abs creates a great vibe around the place and looks after his customers and staff.  Let us know what you think about Grill’d.
